Star Portal

Overview

Star Portal is where Functional Skills UK onboards, trains and supports its staff and tutors. New starters set up their account, complete their induction training, book leave and claim expenses in one place, on the web or on their phone. I designed, built and deployed it on my own, alongside Flow.

The Problem

Onboarding new staff and tutors was a manual job. Training was done differently on different platforms, so there was no single view of who had completed what.

The Solution

One portal for the whole staff journey. New starters are onboarded in a few steps, then work through their induction courses on the same platform: videos, reading, workbooks and quizzes, with a certificate at the end. The same portal handles leave, expense claims, appraisals and safeguarding concerns, and Polaris, an AI assistant now in development, answers questions about the company’s policies.

It is built to be secure. Training videos are served through signed links that expire after an hour, sign-in uses secure cookies, a password change signs the user out everywhere, and every change is logged.
